Firefox 3 and OpenDisc 08.07

Posted June 14th @ 9:25 pm by Chris Gray

Edit: Firefox 3 is out! If you want to upgrade before the new version of OpenDisc is released, jump over to to nab the latest version.

Original post:

If you haven’t already checked it out, SpreadFirefox are holding a Firefox 3 release Download Day and everybody is invited to pledge now to download upon release day. It’s all in the hopes of breaking a Guinness World Record, and you’ll get a handy reminder email so you don’t forget.

We’re holding off releasing OpenDisc 08.07 for another week so we can include it, so if you’d like Firefox 3 on launch day (or would like to help the record attempt) just follow the link below.

I don’t think that you gained anything by delaying the release of OpenDisc 08.07 (Why is it not 08.06?). The people I to whom I would be handing the disc have not participated in download day.

We were holding off releasing primarily so we could include it at an early stage, instead of releasing a week beforehand, then not releasing another version for at least another month. We weren’t waiting as to coerce people into participating in their promotion.

With everything running smoothly we should have a new version of the disc, complete with Firefox 3, available very soon.

I just updated the post to reflect that the release day has happened, so although you missed out on the party you’ll still get to eat the cake. :)

Any idea when the next version will be ready?

My LUG has an event coming up where we want to give out copies of the disk with FF3 on it…

I think The Open Disc in an *extremely useful*, *invaluable* project, and I cannot thank enough to its developers. It helps enormously as “media material” in campaigns for convincing people to switch to Linux.

However, there is only one major issue: the frequency of releases (the stability of dates).

The disc is useful because new versions of free software are released very frequently and people wants the newest version of software.

However, one cannot use the OpenDisc in a large media campaign (in schools, for example) if it cannot count on the date of release (the disc must be manufactured, packaged, distributed, etc., which involves businesses, logistics, etc.)

In this moment, I don’t think a campaigner would distribute 07.10, because the software is muuuuuch too old. He will prefer making his own disc, with a massive loss in quality, presentation, etc…

Would you please consider establishing one or two fixed release dates (during a year) and keep them fixed – as the vast majority of Linux distros do ?

For the disc being *practically useful*, I think this is a must.

    Regards and many thanks,

We’re preparing the next version right now, and once we can get it on the Sourceforge servers we’ll release it officially. If the upload server doesn’t play up 08.07 should be available within 48 hours.

The stability of dates was one of the original things I’d talked about as a reason for starting OpenDisc. Switching to Kiwix has thrown everything out the window however, so we’re going to maintain the disc as-is (without new additions) until the Kiwix based disc is ready to go.
