It seems to me that TheOpenCD used to have some essays on Open Source on the disc. It may have been the entire contents of the book "Open Sources: Voices from the Open Source Revolution", or it may just have been some essays from that book. Or maybe even other essays. In any case, it appears to me that most of those essays are themselves licensed under Open Source friendly terms, and there shouldn't be any problem including them.

In any case, is there some reason why these essays (or similar essays) are not included? If the purpose of this disc is evangelism, then it would sure be nice if it would allow me to point to something like those essays to answer the question (which I always get), "If it's that good, how can they afford to give it away?"

By the way, does this forum incldue any search facilities? I wanted to see if anyone else had asked this sort of question, but I don't see any way to do that.

  2. From the very first version up until 07.10, TheOpenCD and OpenDisc had gradually built up a lot of orphan files, and these articles were amongst those. They were still on the disc, but no links to them were available, so the only people who noticed them were typically people hacking their own customised copies of the disc. Removing these files and others shed 100MB from the disc.

I'm all for including more literature on the disc in future, and once the new wiki goes live it'll be a lot easier to coordinate.

And for some reason the search box has dropped off the main page, but can be found here:

I'll put that on the list of things to do. :)

To conserve space on the CD/DVD a single page with links to the essays. I am not sure what the space limitation you have for the website is but that would be a good place to store them, unless the authors already have them on another site. As mentioned above once you have the wiki up that would be even better.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Keep up the good work.

  4. Another solution would be to have a few people coordinate to get this literature back on OpenDisc, as PDFs or OpenOffice documents. The only real reason they were excluded (like I mentioned above) was that they were tucked away, hidden from view on the old disc. If we could have them presentably displayed, we've got no problem with them on OpenDisc.

Once the next version is released we'll have a bit more time to work on it on the wiki.

Better to use simple text docs that anyone can open & they take much less room than the other options...

Or HTML, which takes up about the same amount of space as text, is similarly universal, and is what the O'Reilly page has anyway.

There shouldn't be any problem copying the html from the O'Reilly page since the copyright page has very explicit permission to repost all the essays as long as the copyright notice is preserved.
